Tara Oceans

Tara Oceans is coming to India! Come and explore Tara when it docks in Mumbai.

As part of the Tara Oceans Expedition, Tara stopped Mumbai on 25th March. It will then travel south towards the Maldives, Mauritius, Réunion and South Africa. Visits of the scientific vessel, the scientists, attend the talk and the film screening on the 25th March 2010. Tara Oceans is an exceptional 3-year marine expedition managed by Tara Expeditions’ team and a scientific consortium, led by the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)

Tara Oceans is an exceptional 3-year marine expedition managed by Tara Expeditions’ team and a scientific consortium, including major international laboratories, led by the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). Like the previous expeditions, it will sail under the auspices of the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP). This program will allow researchers to study previously unknown and crucial marine ecosystems.  Eric Karsenty Research Director for EMBL and CNRS is leading Tara oceans as Co-director of the voyage.

The oceans produce half of the oxygen that we breathe. Prairies of plankton and other micro-organisms constitute, via their photosynthetic activity, an enormous oxygen pump. But these marine organisms are also a major carbon dioxide sink. As a result, the future depends on saving the oceans.

On the 5th of September 2009, the boat ‘Tara’ set sail from Lorient in France on a 3-year expedition across the world to study oceanic ecosystems, for a better understanding of the threats faced by them and thus enable better protection of the oceans’ ecosystems. It will attempt to provide answers to climate issues, and in particular to deepen our knowledge on marine biodiversity.

As part of the Tara Oceans Expedition, Tara is docks at Mumbai on the 25h of March. It will then travel south towards the Maldives, Mauritius, Réunion and South Africa.
